The May story
May Sangla is accessible, beautiful, and busy by valley standards (which means maybe 200 tourists). The Baspa rafting season begins for the adventurous — Class II-III rapids through the gorge. Kamru Fort's Kamaksha Devi temple sees domestic visitors seeking blessings. The Chitkul road is fully open — the last village experience is magnetic. Kinnauri cuisine appears in guesthouses: siddu (steamed stuffed bread), aktori (buckwheat pancake), and patande (Kinnauri crepe). The Rakcham village (16km toward Chitkul) is a quieter base. Hotels fill weekends — book midweek for better rates and peace. The valley floor walks (Sangla to Batseri, 3km, flat) are perfect acclimatization for higher Kinnaur objectives.
