Peak Season
Sissu in May
Himachal Pradesh, India
May opens Sissu fully — 5-18°C. The waterfall is in full flow, crashing 100 feet past the village. The Lahaul Valley turns green from the bottom up. The road to Keylong, Jispa, and onward toward Leh via Baralacha La starts seeing traffic. The Atal Tunnel exit (south portal at Sissu) becomes a selfie magnet. Wildflowers appear on slopes. The Chandra River runs grey-green with snowmelt.
The May story
May Sissu is the first taste of Lahaul for most visitors. The Atal Tunnel exit is dramatic — you emerge from fluorescent-lit tunnel into a valley of completely different character from the Kullu side. The waterfall is in full roar — mist from its base drenches anyone standing at the roadside viewpoint. The village is small (maybe 200 houses) but photogenic: prayer flags, Buddhist gompa, stone-and-wood houses against dramatic mountain backdrop. The Gondhla Fort (8km toward Keylong) is a lesser-known gem — a wooden tower fort similar to Kinnauri architecture. The Tandi confluence (20km) where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers meet is the traditional gateway to Lahaul. Hotels at ₹1,000-2,500. May is the month when Sissu works as a destination, not just a tunnel exit stop.
