December Sangla is winter mountain India without compromise. Fresh snow on Kamru Fort is a photograph that sells calendars. The Kinnauri houses — stone base, wooden upper floors, grey slate roofs — are designed for exactly these conditions, and watching them function in deep winter is an architectural lesson. The local brew (lugdi, from fermented rice, or angoori, from dried grapes) warms evenings. Dried apple and apricot from the autumn harvest fuel winter nutrition. Very few guesthouses stay open — ₹500-800 with room heaters. The road from Karcham needs checking. If you reach Sangla in December, you've entered a world that most tourists will never see. Carry warm layers, patience, and respect for a community living on its own terms.
