Caution
Parvati Valley in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
January Parvati Valley is cold, quiet, and stripped of its backpacker identity. At 2400m, the valley that runs from Bhuntar to Kheerganga freezes over—temperatures of -5°C to 6°C. Tosh village is snowbound. Malana is cut off. Kasol, the valley's backpacker capital, has a handful of stubborn cafes open. The Parvati River runs crystal-blue between snow banks.
The January story
Winter Parvati Valley reveals what the party scene obscures: a profound mountain landscape of narrow gorges, pine forests, and ancient villages perched on impossible slopes. Kasol in January is almost unrecognizable—the Israeli-backpacker cafes that dominate summer are shuttered or skeleton-crewed, and the village returns to its Himachali identity. The few open places serve hot thukpa and Maggi. Tosh, the ridgetop village that became famous for its mountain-view cafes, is accessible by 4x4 or on foot through snow. The views from Tosh in winter—the Parvati Valley carved white and blue below, Himalayan peaks in every direction—are the most dramatic of the year. Malana, the famously insular village, is genuinely inaccessible. The hot springs at Manikaran (downstream) become essential stops. Kheerganga is sealed by snow.
