Road closes from mid-November as snow accumulation makes passage impassable
November at Khardung La is the early-winter shutdown. Daytime at the pass peaks at -8C, nights drop to -20C, and the road sees its first major accumulating snowfall around the second week of the month. Pass closes for winter on the BRO declaration that typically lands in the last week of October but November cements it. The Manali-Leh highway is closed (since mid-October) and the Srinagar-Leh approach takes its first weather closures through November. The Nubra Valley becomes reachable only by army-operated convoys for residents. Tourist access is zero through November. Diskit, Hunder, Sumur hotels are closed for winter. Leh itself remains accessible by air (daily flights from Delhi when weather permits), but the Khardung La-Nubra circuit does not run.
