April at Khardung La is when BRO clearance pushes toward the top but the pass remains closed to civilian traffic. Daytime at the pass climbs to -8C, nights -18C. The famous apricot blossom bloom in the lower Nubra Valley villages — Sumur, Tirit, Hunder — peaks April 8-16, but reaching them from Leh requires Khardung La (closed) or the longer Manali-Leh-Nubra route via Pangong (also still closed in April due to Leh-Manali highway being weeks from opening). Effectively the Nubra Valley remains accessible only via local Ladakh travellers based in Leh year-round (the Sham Valley loop, day-trips to Magnetic Hill). The first real Khardung La opening of the year is consistently late May. Apricot blossom travellers should plan for the very last week of April or first week of May, which catches the tail of blossom and the start of road-open access via Khardung La.
