Kausani in February
Uttarakhand, India
February keeps Kausani frozen — 1-10°C with the Himalayan wall carrying maximum snow cover. The sunrise over the peaks, from the Anasakti Ashram where Gandhi stayed in 1929 and wrote "Anashakti Yoga," is a daily meditation. The tea estate is bare. The pine forests are quiet. Tourism is at minimum. February Kausani is for the traveller who understands that the view is the destination.
The February story
February's maximum snow cover makes the Himalayan panorama its most dramatic — every peak carries more white than any other month. The sunrise sequence (pre-dawn purple, first pink touching the highest peak, gold cascading down the wall, full white blaze) takes about 20 minutes and is worth watching every morning you're here. The Anasakti Ashram maintains Gandhi's room as it was — a simple bed, a writing desk, and that view. His observation that this landscape induced thoughts of detachment from worldly concerns feels less like philosophy and more like a simple observation of fact. February birdwatching from the ridge is excellent: raptors soaring at eye level, finches in the bare trees, and the occasional lammergeier (bearded vulture) drifting past at impossible scale. The walk to Rudradhari Falls (6km one way) is crisp and uncrowded. Budget: Rs 700-1800. The KMVN guesthouse has the best value-to-view ratio. Carry binoculars and a telephoto lens — you'll use both daily.
