Kausani in July
Uttarakhand, India
July monsoon buries Kausani in cloud and rain — 200-300mm, consistent drizzle, and the Himalayan panorama completely hidden. The ridge that usually offers 300km views offers 30 metres. The tea estate is in full production (monsoon tea). The few visitors here are transit travellers or monsoon romantics. Rudradhari Falls is thundering. The pine forests drip.
The July story
July is Kausani without its view — which is like a restaurant famous for its dessert menu serving only main courses. The town's other assets (tea estate, ashram, Baijnath temples, forest walks) function but the Himalayan panorama that defines the destination is hidden behind monsoon cloud. The tea estate's second flush harvest is in full swing — monsoon tea has a robust character distinct from spring's delicacy. Budget rooms: Rs 500-1000. The Rudradhari Falls at peak monsoon flow is impressive. The few visitors discover a Kausani that locals experience: a small ridge town with good tea, a famous view they remember from other months, and the sound of rain on pine needles. If you're in Kumaon for other reasons and detour to Kausani in July, you'll appreciate the setting even without the star attraction. If you come specifically for the view, you'll be disappointed.
