Devprayag in January
Uttarakhand, India
January Devprayag is cold and sacred. At 830 metres where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the Ganga, temperatures range 4-16°C. The confluence — two rivers of different colours meeting in a V of white and green — is visible from the suspension bridge with a clarity that monsoon obscures.
The January story
The confluence (sangam) is Devprayag's entire reason for existence and January is when you see it most clearly. The Bhagirathi runs blue-green from Gangotri; the Alaknanda arrives grey-green from Badrinath. They merge into what becomes the Ganga, and the boundary between the two is visible for hundreds of metres downstream. The Raghunath temple (one of 108 Divya Desams) sits directly above the sangam, its dark stone interior holding a black stone idol of Ram. The ghats are small and steep — this is not Varanasi, it is intimate. Winter morning aarti with maybe five devotees is profoundly personal. Rooms: ₹400-1,200/night.
