May is Corbett's last gasp before monsoon closures. Temperatures hit 25-42°C, and only the most dedicated wildlife enthusiasts brave the afternoon heat. But counter-intuitively, May is one of the best months for tiger sightings — the few remaining water sources become magnets, and tigers are forced into the open. The Dhikala zone is still open (until June 15 typically). Morning safaris (5:30 AM start) in the golden light of a dry forest are prime wildlife photography conditions. The crowds are minimal. This is insider timing — the combination of heat and lower tourist numbers means better guide attention and fewer jeeps at sighting spots.
The May story
May at Corbett is an insider's game. The guides know exactly which water source each tiger is visiting, and with fewer jeeps in the park, the animals are calmer and less vehicle-shy. The Dhikala watchtower at sunrise in May — golden grassland, mirror-still river, mist just starting to form — is one of the most serene wildlife moments in India. Tiger sightings are genuinely excellent: the park reports some of its highest sighting frequencies in May because animal movements are so predictable around water. Carry 4 litres of water per person, sunscreen, a hat, and light cotton clothes. The jeep has no shade cover beyond a basic canopy. Book Dhikala accommodation if still available — the reduced demand means last-minute permits are sometimes possible. Safari costs are the same as peak season. Lodge rates are at annual lows: ₹4000-12000 for quality stays. The Kaladhungi house where Jim Corbett wrote "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" is a 30 km drive from Ramnagar and an essential visit for anyone who loves the park's history. The legacy is personal here — Corbett walked these forests, tracked these tigers' ancestors, and eventually became India's first conservation voice. May is a good month to feel that history without the tourist circus.
