Jim Corbett National Park in October
Uttarakhand, India
Post-monsoon grass is thick, making tiger sightings unpredictable despite peak season conditions
October sees progressive zone openings. Bijrani typically opens mid-October, with Dhikala following in mid-November. The forest is still lush from monsoon, and the grass is tall — 2-3 metres in the phanta (grassland) areas, reducing visibility. Tiger sightings are harder but not impossible. Elephants are easily spotted as they move through the green landscape. The weather is ideal: 15-30°C, clear skies, and the Himalayan foothills visible to the north. This is a transitional month — the park is not yet at peak wildlife viewing, but the lodge rates are 30-40% below winter peaks, and the birding is excellent with winter migrants arriving.
The October story
October is the rebuilding month. Bijrani zone opens mid-month, the grass is still tall but starting to dry, and tiger sightings begin improving as water sources reduce. The elephant herds are visible moving through the green-gold landscape. The birding is outstanding — October migrants include raptors, warblers, and flycatchers that use the Corbett forest as a stopover. The Ramganga drops enough for sandbars to emerge, and mugger crocodiles appear. The weather is perfect for safaris: 15-30°C, clear sky, and comfortable jeep rides. Lodge rates are 30-40% below December peaks: ₹5000-15000. Safari permits for Bijrani and Jhirna are easily available. Dhikala opens mid-November so it's not yet available. Pro tip: the Durga Devi zone in the northeast corner opens in October and offers excellent birdwatching along the Ramganga gorge — the forest here is denser and less visited.
