Turtuk in October
Ladakh, India
October at Turtuk is the year's closing window. Daytime in the village 12-16C in the first half, dropping to 5-12C in the second; nights drop to -3 to -8C. Khardung La pass closure events become more frequent through the month and full winter closure typically falls October 25-30. Once the pass shuts, the Diskit-Turtuk road becomes inaccessible to civilian travel. The first week of October is the cleanest closing window — the village still in autumn colour, walnut and apple harvest tail, weather workable. Homestays start winding down through mid-October — Ahmad Family, Maha Guesthouse and most family-run rooms close by October 20-25. Lhakhang Polo Guesthouse and Turtuk Holiday Resort sometimes hold one extra week. ILP processing remains fast. Acclimatisation at Leh for 48 hours before crossing Khardung La remains essential. Friday namaaz hour and conservative dress norms unchanged. Stay short (1-2 nights); take the apricot kernels and dried apricots home — the village will not be visitable again until late May.
