Turtuk in February
Ladakh, India
Roads freeze over and villages isolate completely in February's harsh conditions
February at Turtuk is the year's coldest stretch. Daytime peaks at 0-3C, nights -12 to -18C. Apricot trees in the village courtyards begin forming the buds that will become the famous late-March/early-April blossom — but the village remains unreachable from Leh because Khardung La is firmly closed. The Diskit-Turtuk road is impassable; even the army convoys in February run on the Skardu-side logistics line that connects Turtuk to the rest of Ladakh through limited military movements only. Homestays closed. The 350-odd village residents (mostly Balti, Muslim, descended from the Yagbo dynasty) carry on village life — Friday namaaz at the Mosque, courtyard storytelling, dried-apricot inventory checks. The first visitor window remains late May.
