Khardung La pass closes in winter, cutting off road access to the village
January at Turtuk is when the village functions on its own internal logic, cut off from Leh by the closed Khardung La pass. Daytime in the village (at 2,900m, lower than most of Ladakh) reaches -2 to 5C, nights -10 to -15C — milder than Leh because of the lower altitude and the warmer microclimate of the Shyok valley. The road from Diskit (which is the gateway after Khardung La) is closed, and there is no alternative route into the Nubra Valley. The village runs on stored apricot and walnut crops, dried meat, and the local economy that has functioned this way for centuries. Tourist access is zero. The handful of family homestays (Ahmad Family Homestay, Maha Guesthouse, the Polo Guesthouse-style operations) close for winter. The first viable visitor window of any year is approximately late May, after Khardung La opens and the Diskit-Turtuk road clears.
