Turtuk in July
Ladakh, India
Peak crowds
July is one of Turtuk's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Peak Jun–Aug when high-altitude passes open; closed Dec–Apr by deep snow and extreme cold.
July at Turtuk is the defining month — fresh apricot harvest. Daytime 22-26C, nights 7-10C, monthly rainfall under 25mm. The village orchards are at peak fruit; trees laden with the apricots Turtuk is famous for (the Halman variety is particularly prized). Fresh apricots sell at orchard prices ₹100-150/kg versus ₹500/kg in Leh markets; dried apricots, apricot kernels (the seed inside the pit, eaten as a delicacy), apricot jam, and apricot oil are all locally produced and significantly higher quality and lower priced than anywhere else in Ladakh. Homestays — Ahmad Family, Maha, Lhakhang Polo, Turtuk Holiday Resort and the small family-run rooms — book out 2-3 months ahead through tour operators based in Leh (most homestays do not have online booking). Khardung La and the Diskit-Turtuk road at full reliability. ILP processing fast. The full Nubra-Turtuk circuit (Diskit Monastery, Hunder dunes, Sumur hot springs, Panamik, Turtuk village stay) at peak operation. Friday namaaz hour limits village access 12:30-1:30pm. Conservative dress and no-alcohol-in-public norms apply. Stay 3 nights to fully experience the harvest.
