Tirthan Valley in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in March — fishing season opens, wildflower walks are rewarding, and crowds remain thin; pack layers as mornings stay cool despite afternoon warmth.
March is when Tirthan Valley wakes up properly. Temperatures reach 14-18°C by afternoon, dropping to 3-5°C at night. Apple and cherry trees begin blooming, turning the valley into a patchwork of white and pink. Trout fishing season officially opens — brown and rainbow trout in the Tirthan River, regulated through permits (₹500/day from the fisheries office in Banjar). The river is still cold and low — ideal wading conditions. GHNP ecozone treks remain closed but lower valley trails (Rolla, Pashanjhar waterfall) are fully accessible. Homestay occupancy picks up, especially on weekends.
The March story
March is the start of Tirthan's best six-month stretch. The valley achieves a balance that it loses in summer: warm enough for outdoor activity, cool enough to sleep without a fan, green enough to be beautiful, and empty enough to feel like a discovery rather than a destination. Trout fishing on the Tirthan is the marquee activity — the river between Gushaini and the GHNP gate holds good populations of brown trout in the 1-2 pound range, and experienced anglers occasionally land 3-pounders in deeper pools. Fly fishing is the preferred method; local guides (Tirthan Anglers, Himalayan Ecotourism) provide gear and instruction for beginners at ₹2,000-3,000 for a half-day session. Beyond fishing: the Jalori Pass road is reliably open now, giving access to the Serolsar Lake trek (5km one way from the pass, easy grade, through dense oak-rhododendron forest). The 700-year-old Shringa Rishi temple is worth the 2km uphill walk for its carved wood architecture alone. March weekdays are nearly empty; weekends draw small groups from Chandigarh and Delhi but nothing overwhelming. Book homestays for weekends — places like Raju's, the Tirthan Retreat, and Sunshine Himalayan Cottages fill up by Wednesday.
