Roopkund in July
Uttarakhand, India
Monsoon rains create life-threatening slippery conditions on exposed high-altitude terrain
July monsoon makes Roopkund dangerous. Heavy rainfall at lower elevations, fresh snow at 5,000m, zero visibility, and extreme landslide risk on the approach trails. Most trekking companies suspend operations. The skeleton lake is accessible only in theory — the reality is cloud, rain, and treacherous footing. Leeches below 3,000m. The meadows are green but invisible in mist.
The July story
Do not attempt Roopkund in July. This is not caution for liability — it's physics. The trail sections through forest become leech-infested waterfalls. The meadows disappear in cloud. The Bhagwabasa-Roopkund section becomes a genuine survival situation with zero visibility and fresh snow over old ice. Multiple rescue operations have been triggered by monsoon trekkers. The Uttarakhand government sometimes officially restricts the route. If you're in Lohajung, the lower forest walks are beautiful in monsoon green, but the high route is off limits. Use July to process your May-June photos and plan an October return.
