Roopkund in March
Uttarakhand, India
March begins the slow thaw at lower elevations but Roopkund at 5,029m remains locked in winter. Snow bridges are unstable, avalanche risk peaks as temperatures fluctuate. The skeleton lake is still under ice. Bedni Bugyal and Ali Bugyal (the alpine meadows en route) are snow-covered. No commercial treks operate. Experienced mountaineers sometimes attempt winter approaches, but this is expedition territory, not trekking.
The March story
March is your last month for comfortable pre-trek preparation. The operators who run Roopkund â Indiahikes (âđ12,000-15,000), YHAI (âđ5,000-7,000), Trek the Himalayas â open bookings around now. Fitness requirement is non-negotiable: you need to sustain 6-8 hours of uphill walking at altitude for consecutive days. The Bedni Bugyal section is the most beautiful â India's largest alpine meadow with 360-degree Himalayan views. The Bhagwabasa-to-Roopkund push on summit day starts at 3am and covers 2km with 150m altitude gain over snow. Check your operator's cancellation policy â weather can close the route even in season.
