Roopkund in November
Uttarakhand, India
Snow and subzero temperatures make the lake inaccessible and camps dangerous this late in the season
November closes Roopkund. Early November may allow experienced trekkers with winter gear to reach the lake, but snow is building, temperatures dropping to -15°C at altitude, and the window shrinks daily. By mid-November, the route is effectively winter-locked. Most operators have shut down for the season. The skeleton lake begins its annual disappearance under ice.
The November story
Early November offers a closing window for winter-equipped, altitude-experienced trekkers only. The skeleton lake is freezing over — watching it transition from liquid to ice is rare and remarkable. Snow depth at Bhagwabasa makes the approach slow. The Himalayan views are extraordinary in thin winter atmosphere — you can see individual rock faces on Trishul's flanks at 30km distance. But the window is measured in days, not weeks. After mid-November, the route is winter-locked until May. This is not for recreational trekkers. If you're not comfortable with crampons, ice axes, and -15°C camping, this is not your month.
