Good Time
Mandi in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
March often hosts the Mandi Shivratri Fair (check Hindu calendar dates). Even without the fair, March brings spring to this temple town—temperatures climb to 10-22°C, the Beas River picks up flow from early snowmelt, and the hillsides around Mandi turn green. The town's colonial-era Raj Mahal (now a heritage hotel) looks lovely in spring light.
The March story
If the Shivratri Fair falls in March, everything said about February applies—but with better weather. The fair is genuinely extraordinary: Lord Raghunath (Rama) presides over the assembled deities, there are chariot processions, and the evening cultural programs showcase Himachali folk traditions. Outside the fair, March Mandi is a pleasant base for exploration. The Rewalsar Lake (24 km), sacred to Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists simultaneously, is a unique half-day trip. The road to Parashar Lake is clear and the lake at 2730m may still have snow around its edges. The town's bazaar sells Himachali shawls, woollen caps (Mandi topi), and local pickles worth stocking up on.
