Lonar Crater in February
Maharashtra, India
Go February — peak window holds, full rim circuit comfortable, geological visit ideal.
Peak crowds
February is one of Lonar Crater's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Never crowded. Pink lake phenomenon (2020) was seasonal.
February at Lonar Crater continues the January peak — 14-30°C, dry Vidarbha plateau, the only known hypervelocity basaltic-rock impact crater on Earth at peak visiting conditions. The 1.83 km wide, 137m deep crater bowl visible from multiple rim points. The saline-alkaline Lonar Lake (uniquely both, pH 10-11) holds full post-monsoon level. The 10th c Chalukyan Daityasudan temple on the rim — basalt-carved sculpture detail well-preserved. Birdlife active throughout the rim and ravines. MTDC Lonar Tourist Resort the main on-rim accommodation.
The February story
Continue January's play — 1-2 nights at MTDC Lonar Tourist Resort or Hotel Krishna in Lonar town. Aurangabad 145 km away as connector (3-4 hr drive via NH-65 + state roads). Rim circumnavigation (6 km loop) early morning for cool dawn. Descent to lake via eastern path past Daityasudan temple (1.5 hr down, 2 hr up). Don't drink the alkaline lake water. Boating prohibited (ecological reserve). Add Sita Nahani waterfall ravine birdwatching — dry winter but ravine retains pools. Mining village 1 km north basic eateries. Combine with Aurangabad-Ajanta-Ellora circuit. Plan 4-6 hours on-site for proper geological visit. Photography: February dawn light on the crater bowl from western rim and Daityasudan temple basalt detail at peak. Scientific note: NASA and ISRO study Lonar as Mars analog because of basaltic substrate. Pleistocene-Holocene age (10K-570K years; recent thermoluminescence dating suggests upper end). Hotels at peak shoulder rates; book 14-21 days ahead.
