Lonar Crater in December
Maharashtra, India
Go December — year's clearest air, full rim and lake circuit, photography at absolute peak.
Peak crowds
December is one of Lonar Crater's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Never crowded. Pink lake phenomenon (2020) was seasonal.
December at Lonar Crater is the year's clearest geological day — 11-28°C, dry Vidarbha plateau at peak transparency, the 1.83 km wide basaltic-impact crater bowl visible 360° from rim, the alkaline-saline Lonar Lake still holding high post-monsoon level. The rim greens fading to dry-grey by late month. The 10th c Chalukyan Daityasudan temple at peak basalt-carving photographic clarity. Christmas-NYE brings small-scale heritage-tourism arrivals — most stay at Aurangabad and day-trip Lonar. MTDC Lonar Tourist Resort at peak-shoulder rates.
The December story
December is textbook Lonar — book MTDC Lonar Tourist Resort 30+ days ahead for Dec 24-Jan 2, or Hotel Krishna in Lonar town. Aurangabad 145 km as connector — leave 6am for 3.5-4 hr drive via NH-65 + state roads. On rim by 10am. Plan 1-2 nights on-site for proper geological visit. Day 1: rim circumnavigation (6 km loop) at cool 11°C dawn. Day 2: descent to lake via eastern path past Daityasudan temple (1.5 hr down, 2 hr up), Sita Nahani waterfall (mostly dry by late December but ravine pools still birdy), birdwatching. Don't drink alkaline lake water (pH 10-11). Photography: December dawn gold-light on crater bowl from western rim is the year's peak shot — clear air visibility 40+ km. Daityasudan basalt-carving detail at absolute peak. Combine with Aurangabad-Ajanta-Ellora circuit (4-5 day arc). Scientific note: December dry-air conditions ideal for NASA/ISRO Mars-analog research; some research groups schedule field work then. Hotels at Dec 24-Jan 2 peak — book MTDC or Hotel Krishna 30+ days ahead. Year-end heritage trip from Mumbai/Pune/Delhi via Aurangabad 45-min flight or 22221 Rajdhani train: ideal.
