Lonar Crater in November
Maharashtra, India
Go November — peak Lonar window, full rim and lake circuit, photography at year-best.
Peak crowds
November is one of Lonar Crater's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Never crowded. Pink lake phenomenon (2020) was seasonal.
November at Lonar Crater is geological-tourism peak — 14-30°C, dry post-monsoon Vidarbha plateau, the 1.83 km wide hypervelocity basaltic-rock impact crater at peak visiting conditions. The alkaline-saline Lonar Lake (uniquely both, pH 10-11) at high post-monsoon level. The rim greens still holding from August-September monsoon, fading toward December dry-grey. The 10th c Chalukyan Daityasudan temple at peak photographic clarity. Diwali Nov 8 brings small village observances in Lonar town. MTDC Lonar Tourist Resort at peak-shoulder rates.
The November story
November is textbook Lonar — book MTDC Lonar Tourist Resort 21+ days ahead, or Hotel Krishna in Lonar town. Aurangabad 145 km as connector — leave 6am for 3.5-4 hr drive via NH-65 + state roads. On rim by 10am. Plan 1-2 nights on-site for proper geological visit. Day 1: rim circumnavigation (6 km loop, 3-4 hours). Day 2: descent to lake via eastern path past Daityasudan temple (1.5 hr down, 2 hr up), Sita Nahani waterfall ravine birdwatching. Don't drink alkaline lake water. Photography: November dawn gold-light on crater bowl from western rim is the year's best shot. Daityasudan basalt-carving detail at peak clarity. Combine with Aurangabad-Ajanta-Ellora circuit (4-5 day arc). Time Diwali Nov 8 with Aurangabad-Sambhajinagar old-city diya walks. Scientific note: NASA studies Lonar as Mars-impact analog because of basaltic substrate — recent thermoluminescence dating suggests Pleistocene age (570K years). Hotels at near-peak — book 21-30 days ahead.
