Leh in October
Ladakh, India
Roads into Leh close by mid-October, leaving you a narrow window before winter isolation
October is Leh's closing act. The Manali-Leh highway typically shuts by mid-October after early snowfall on Tanglang La and Baralacha La. The Srinagar-Leh road may hold until early November but gets unreliable. Temperatures drop to 0-15°C — sunny afternoons are pleasant but mornings and nights bite. The tourist population is a trickle: mostly long-stay travellers, researchers, and people wrapping up treks. Hotels start closing. Restaurants reduce hours. The season is ending, and everyone in town knows it.
The October story
Early October (first two weeks) can be spectacular if the roads cooperate. The autumn colour — golden poplars against stark grey mountains under deep blue sky — is Ladakh's most photographed palette. Pangong Lake is still accessible via Chang La and the blue is startlingly vivid against brown-gold shoreline. Nubra Valley is quiet and gorgeous. But you're playing a closing window: check road status daily, carry warm layers, and have flights booked as backup. By mid-October, the Manali road is typically done. By late October, most guesthouses in Changspa are closing, restaurants are down to a handful, and the supply chain slows. Permits still process but with less urgency. If you visit early October, you get September's golden light with even fewer people. If you push late October, you're rolling the dice on getting stuck. Jio works. SNM Hospital open. Carry extra medication — pharmacies reduce stock.
