The October story
Autumn Lolab is staggeringly beautiful and almost completely unvisited. The valley's chinar-lined streams, with red and gold leaves reflecting in clear water, are some of the finest autumn landscapes in India. The air smells of fallen leaves and woodsmoke. Gujjar families return from high pastures with their flocks, filling the valley with the sound of bells and bleating. The Kalaroos caves make a good day trip while conditions allow. By late October, nights are properly cold and the first frost announces winter's approach. The drive from Srinagar passes through apple orchards heavy with fruit. Bring warm layers and a camera. You won't find this view in any guidebook because no guidebook covers Lolab.
