The 2026 yatra opens May 25 at 12:00 noon — the kapaat-opening ceremony with the chief Granthi's ardas (announced by the Gurdwara Sri Hemkund Sahib Management Trust President Narendrajit Singh Bindra to Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Radha Raturi). Daytime at the shrine 8-12C, nights -2 to 2C; at Ghangaria daytime 12-15C, nights 0-4C. The 14km trek from Govindghat (1,828m) through Pulna, Bhyundar Village, and Ghangaria (3,049m) plus the additional 6km steep climb to Hemkund (4,329m) is genuinely demanding even for fit pilgrims. Helicopter from Govindghat helibase to Ghangaria runs at ₹10,080 round-trip (Pawan Hans, book at heliyatra.irctc.co.in with mandatory Chardham + Hemkund Yatra Registration). Pony service from Pulna village (an alternative trek start, 4km past Govindghat) costs ₹2,500-3,500 each way. Ghangaria accommodation: gurdwara dharamshala (free, langar included, 200+ beds), GMVN tents (₹400-800/person), private lodges and tents (₹1,500-3,500). Overnight stay at Hemkund itself is not allowed — pilgrims trek up from Ghangaria, dip in the holy lake, do darshan, and return same day.
