Hemkund Sahib in December
Uttarakhand, India
Pilgrimage site completely snow-locked and inaccessible in winter months
December at Hemkund Sahib is the deep-winter dead point. Daytime at the shrine peaks at -8C, nights drop to -22C, the lake basin (4,329m) under accumulating snow that will reach 4-7m depth by January. The 6km Ghangaria-Hemkund steep stretch and the 14km Govindghat-Ghangaria trail are both impassable. The Gurdwara is closed since October 10. Ghangaria base camp infrastructure (gurdwara dharamshala, GMVN tents, private lodges) all closed. Helicopter operations from Govindghat suspended. Govindghat itself remains reachable from Joshimath but the broader yatra infrastructure is shut. Winter visitors to the wider Garhwal region (Auli skiing, Joshimath) do not reach Hemkund — the shrine is firmly off-limits. The next yatra opens late May 2027, dates announced by the Gurdwara Sri Hemkund Sahib Management Trust.
