Hemkund Sahib in March
Uttarakhand, India
Snow blocks the trail until late May, making March access impossible
March at Hemkund Sahib is the pre-yatra preparation month. The Indian Army crews and the Gurdwara Sri Hemkund Sahib Management Trust begin snow-clearance prep on the upper Ghangaria-to-Hemkund 6km stretch — the steeper section that holds the deepest snow. Daytime at the shrine peaks at -8C, nights -22C. Ghangaria base camp still under 2-3m of snow; the gurdwara dharamshala, GMVN tents and private lodges are closed. The 14km Govindghat-Ghangaria trek route remains impassable to civilian travellers. Helicopter operations from Govindghat helibase to Ghangaria (Pawan Hans, ₹3,500-4,000 one-way) do not run in March. The 2026 yatra opens May 25 (announced by the Trust); March falls firmly outside. Govindghat is reachable from Joshimath but the village functions in pre-season mode.
