Hemkund Sahib in July
Uttarakhand, India
Peak crowds
July is one of Hemkund Sahib's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Gurudwara opens June–September; pilgrims visit during these open months. Closed by snow October–May.
July at Hemkund Sahib runs full monsoon. Monthly rainfall 350-450mm across the Bhyundar valley region. Daytime at the shrine 14-18C, nights 4-7C; at Ghangaria daytime 18-22C, nights 8-12C, humidity 88 percent. The 14km Govindghat-Ghangaria trail becomes slippery, especially the Bhyundar Village-Ghangaria stretch through dense undergrowth where leeches show up after the first major rains. The 6km Ghangaria-Hemkund steep climb is at year-most-demanding because of wet rock conditions. Helicopter from Govindghat to Ghangaria takes 30-40 percent weather cancellations through July (refunds processed within 7 days). Landslide risk on the Govindghat-Joshimath approach is at its highest — 1-3 events typical, often clearing within 12-24 hours. The Valley of Flowers (the sister UNESCO trek 4km from Ghangaria) is at peak bloom — over 600 flower species in alpine carpet — and many pilgrims rate the combined Hemkund + VoF trip as worth the rain. Pilgrim flow holds at 25-35 percent below June peak. Carry rain gear, non-slip footwear, leech socks, ORS.
