Auli in December
Uttarakhand, India
Go in December—Auli's ski season opens with reliable snow, -5 to 5°C temperatures, and gondola rides through active snowfall; book GMVN cottages well ahead.
Peak crowds
December is one of Auli's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Ski season Dec-Mar gets crowded. Limited accommodation — book 2-3 weeks ahead in peak winter.
December establishes winter at Auli. Snow deepens, the ski slope takes shape, and the GMVN resort begins early-season operations. Late December brings the first brave skiers. Nanda Devi in December — snow-covered from base to summit — is the most complete view of the mountain all year.
The December story
December is when Auli transitions from snow landscape to ski destination. The GMVN resort opens, equipment is deployed, and the first skiers arrive — usually during the Christmas-New Year window. The snowpack is building but not yet at February's depth. The skiing is early-season (thinner cover, occasionally icy patches) but the absence of crowds means you get the slopes almost to yourself. The cable car through snow-laden deodar forest in December is magical. Nanda Devi in full winter dress — every ridge and couloir picked out in white — is the mountain at its most magnificent. December nights hit -10°C. Joshimath has limited but adequate accommodation. For skiers, December is the preview. For mountain lovers, December is the main event.
