Kalpa in April
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in April — wildflower season aligns with clear skies and moderate temperatures, though pack wind gear and acclimatize for the 2960m elevation.
April transforms Kalpa. Apple trees blossom pink and white across every terrace, framed by the snow-covered Kinner Kailash behind them. The visual — delicate blossoms against a 6000m Himalayan wall — is among India's finest spring sights. Temperatures at 5-16°C are brisk but comfortable. The road from Shimla opens reliably. Wildflowers carpet the forest floor. Tourist numbers begin building.
The April story
The apple blossom against Kinner Kailash is Kalpa's money shot, and April is when it happens. Every terrace, every slope, every backyard explodes in pink and white. The morning light through blossom canopy, with the 6000m wall of Kinner Kailash behind, is one of the most photogenic scenes in the Indian Himalayas. Beyond photography, April opens the Kinnaur circuit: Kalpa to Sangla valley (50km) to Chitkul (India's last inhabited village before the Tibet border). The circuit passes through apple country, Buddhist-Hindu hybrid villages, and Sutlej gorge scenery. The Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar and Narayan-Nagini temples in Kalpa show Kinnaur's unique religious syncretism. For food, April brings fresh greens to the winter-restricted diet — local saag and morels (guchchi mushrooms, expensive and delicious) appear. Accommodation: Rs 1000-2500. Book ahead for weekends. The drive from Shimla is reliable but long — consider breaking at Narkanda or Rampur.
