# Is Kashmir in January worth it? Yes, if you ski. Wait, if you don't

Kashmir in January is actually two separate decisions — one about Gulmarg, one about Srinagar.

Gulmarg: 5/5. Go. Peak ski season. Powder at world-class quality. Apharwat gondola running daily. Ski-rental ecosystem fully active.

Srinagar: 2/5. Wait. Most houseboats are shuttered. Dal Lake is either freezing or frozen. Shops shut early. Flight cancellations common on heavy-snow days.

Your decision depends on which one is your trip.

Here's what's happening in each.

Gulmarg (ski-traveller's verdict: go)

Gulmarg at 2,650m gets reliable snow by mid-December and peaks through January and February. The Apharwat gondola (Asia's highest and second-longest ski lift) runs you up to 3,980m — from there, the open bowls and tree-run glades put Gulmarg in the same conversation as Hakuba or Niseko, at a fraction of the price.

Powder quality is good-to-exceptional. Lift-ticket prices are ₹1,200–1,700/day — less than one Japanese or Austrian lift hour. Ski-school rates are ₹2,500–4,500/day with a qualified instructor. Gear rental is ₹800–1,500/day for skis and boots.

The catches are real. Avalanche risk is significant — stick to ski patrol-approved zones and avoid the backcountry without a local guide. The medical setup at Gulmarg is basic; anything serious means evacuation to SKIMS Srinagar (45km). Accommodation fills 30 days ahead — Hotel Kolahoi Green, Heevan Retreat, and The Khyber are the mid-to-top tier.

Weather cancellations hit the gondola 3–5 days per month. Build buffer.

Srinagar (everyone else's verdict: wait)

Srinagar in January is 3–8°C daytime, -2 to 3°C nights. Dal Lake sometimes partially freezes (Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harsh-winter period from Dec 21 to Jan 31, is the traditional name for this window).

Sixty percent of Dal Lake houseboats close for winter. Shikara rides still operate (weather permitting) but the romantic summer-evening photos you've seen are not happening — it's cold, often cloudy, and short days mean you're off the water by 16:30. Shops in old Srinagar run half-day hours. Mughal gardens are closed for maintenance.

Saffron fields in Pampore (the postcard Kashmir scene) were harvested in October — not a January experience.

Flight cancellations at SXR are frequent in January. Srinagar–Leh road is closed. Srinagar–Jammu rail project is running but still limited to short sections. For non-ski travellers, January Kashmir is the year's worst month.

The hybrid case

If you ski, go to Gulmarg, stay in Gulmarg, and skip Srinagar for this trip — come back in April for tulips and May for the houseboat experience. If you don't ski, wait until April. Dachigam cherry blossom, gardens reopening, daily-life rhythms back to normal, saffron-pickling season starts.
