Is Jaisalmer in August worth it? Skip
1/5. 40°C+ daytime, desert safaris effectively closed, camel-cart operators working on other jobs. This is not a shoulder — this is off-season.

# Is Jaisalmer in August worth it? Skip
Jaisalmer in August scores 1/5. It is the lowest-scoring month of the year. Heat, closed desert operations, and the near-total absence of the experience the city is famous for.
Verdict: Skip. Come in November or December. Both score 5/5 for entirely different reasons (camel season, weather, light).
Here is what's happening in August.
Daytime temperatures in Jaisalmer in August average 32–38°C, with peaks to 42°C on clear days. The Thar Desert is not a dry heat at this time of year — the remnants of the Southwest Monsoon bring sporadic humidity. The combination is uncomfortable in a way that dry desert isn't.
The marquee experience — camel safari into the dunes — doesn't really run in August. Most safari operators treat July and August as off-season and take other work. The camel herds are pastured further from the city than in winter. The sand is scorching underfoot — both camels and walkers cover ground reluctantly.
Sand blowback on the desert-camp routes is heavy in August. What in December is a postcard-perfect dune camp is in August a half-buried Swiss tent with sand piled against the door.
Jaisalmer Fort itself stays open. Patwon Ki Haveli, the Jain temples, Gadisar Lake — all accessible year-round. But the fort's flagstones at 37°C are unwalkable for anyone with toddlers, heart conditions, or soft shoes.
Hotel rates drop 50–70% from peak. A ₹15,000 haveli suite goes for ₹4,000–5,000. This is the main argument August-advocates make.
It's not enough. You've come to Jaisalmer for the desert night, the camel safari, and the fort ramparts at sunset. In August you get a cheap haveli room, 40°C day-walks, and a half-hearted hotel-arranged "camel ride" on a short dune 15 minutes from town.
The only case for August: you're in Rajasthan for a wedding, you have one day between Jodhpur and Jaipur, and you want to tick Jaisalmer off the list. Visit the fort for 3 hours at dawn, eat an early lunch, drive out. Do not sleep in Jaisalmer in August.
For everyone else: November (5/5), December (5/5), February (5/5). Three clean months. Desert fully operational, camel herds back, daytime 18–28°C. Why choose August when there are three obviously better windows?
