How Much Should Things Actually Cost in India? An Anti-Scam Pricing Guide

Real prices for transport, hotels, food, and activities — so nobody charges you 5x because you look foreign

The Golden Rule

If someone approaches YOU with a price, it's too high.

If you approach THEM, it's closer to real.

This single principle will save you more money in India than any guidebook. The tout outside the train station, the taxi driver at the airport exit, the "guide" at the monument entrance — they're all marking up because they found you, not because you found them.

Walk past the first layer of people. Always.

Transport Prices: What You Should Actually Pay

### Airport Taxis

| Route | Fair Price | Scam Price |

|-------|-----------|------------|

| Delhi Airport to Central Delhi | ₹400-600 (prepaid counter) | ₹1,500-2,500 |

| Mumbai Airport to South Mumbai | ₹600-800 (prepaid/Uber) | ₹2,000-3,000 |

| Jaipur Airport to City | ₹300-500 (prepaid) | ₹1,000-1,500 |

**The fix:** Use the PREPAID TAXI counter inside the airport. Fixed government rates. You pay at the counter, get a receipt, hand it to the driver. No negotiation. Alternatively, book Uber/Ola from the app — price is locked before you get in.

### Auto-Rickshaws

- **Base fare:** ₹25-30 (varies by city)

- **Per km:** ₹10-15

- **Short city ride (2-3 km):** ₹50-80

- **Medium ride (5-7 km):** ₹100-200

- **Cross-city (10+ km):** ₹200-400

**The fix:** Insist on the meter. If they refuse (common in tourist areas), use Uber/Ola instead. In Delhi, the metro is faster and cheaper for most routes.

### Uber/Ola

30-50% cheaper than auto-rickshaws in most cities. AC. No haggling. GPS-tracked for safety. There is zero reason not to use them in any Indian city with coverage.

- Uber Go (compact car): ₹8-12/km

- Ola Mini: ₹7-11/km

- Auto on app: ₹5-8/km

### Trains

| Class | 4-8 Hour Journey | Overnight |

|-------|------------------|-----------|

| AC Chair Car (CC) | ₹200-800 | N/A |

| AC 3-Tier Sleeper (3A) | N/A | ₹800-1,500 |

| AC 2-Tier Sleeper (2A) | N/A | ₹1,200-2,500 |

| AC First Class (1A) | N/A | ₹2,000-4,000 |

Book on IRCTC (irctc.co.in) or the Ixigo app. Book 2-4 weeks ahead for confirmed seats. Tatkal (last-minute) bookings open at 10am the day before — competitive and stressful.

### Domestic Flights

- **Advance booking (2-3 weeks):** ₹2,000-4,500 one-way

- **Last week booking:** ₹4,000-8,000

- **Same day:** ₹6,000-15,000

IndiGo and SpiceJet are the budget carriers. Air India is decent post-Tata acquisition. Book directly on airline websites for the best prices. Skyscanner or Google Flights for comparison.

Accommodation: What's Normal

| Type | Price Range (per night) | What You Get |

|------|------------------------|-------------|

| Hostel dorm | ₹500-1,500 | Bunk bed, shared bathroom, common area, WiFi |

| Hostel private room | ₹1,500-3,000 | Private room, usually shared bathroom |

| Budget hotel | ₹1,500-3,000 | Basic room, AC, attached bathroom, inconsistent WiFi |

| Mid-range hotel | ₹3,000-6,000 | Clean room, reliable AC, decent breakfast, WiFi |

| Heritage hotel | ₹5,000-15,000 | Converted palace/haveli, character, rooftop restaurant |

| Luxury hotel | ₹10,000-25,000+ | Oberoi/Taj level, pool, spa, everything works |

| Homestay | ₹1,000-3,000 | Best value. Real family, home-cooked food, local knowledge |

**Pro tip:** Homestays deliver the best experience-to-price ratio in India. You get home-cooked meals (worth ₹500+ at a restaurant), local insider tips, and genuine human connection. NakshIQ lists verified stays across our destinations.

**Booking:** Use Booking.com or Agoda for hotels. MakeMyTrip for domestic deals. For homestays, check Airbnb or ask locally.

Food: The Real Prices

| Item | Normal Price | Tourist-Trap Price |

|------|-------------|-------------------|

| Street food meal (chaat, samosa, vada pav) | ₹50-150 | ₹200-400 |

| Restaurant thali (full meal) | ₹150-400 | ₹500-800 |

| Nice sit-down restaurant | ₹500-1,500/person | ₹2,000+ |

| Coffee shop (Starbucks-level) | ₹150-300 | N/A (fixed prices) |

| Chai from a stall | ₹10-20 | ₹50-100 (if they see you're foreign) |

| Bottled water (1L) | ₹20 (shop) | ₹50-80 (hotel minibar) |

| Beer (domestic, restaurant) | ₹150-300 | ₹400-600 |

| Beer (imported, restaurant) | ₹300-500 | ₹600-900 |

**The water rule:** A 1-liter bottle of Bisleri or Kinley should cost ₹20 at any shop. Hotels charge ₹40-80. If anyone charges more than ₹40 outside a hotel, refuse. Check the seal — some vendors refill bottles with tap water.

**The food strategy:** Eat where locals eat. If a restaurant is full of Indians, the food is good and fairly priced. If a restaurant has only foreigners, you're paying a tourism premium.

Activities: Standard Rates

| Activity | Indian Price | Foreign Tourist Price |

|----------|-------------|----------------------|

| Taj Mahal entry | ₹50 | ₹1,100 |

| Most ASI monuments | ₹25-40 | ₹300-600 |

| Corbett/Ranthambore safari (jeep) | ₹1,500-3,000 | ₹3,000-6,000 |

| Rishikesh white water rafting | ₹800-1,500 | ₹1,000-2,500 |

| Yoga class (drop-in) | ₹300-800 | ₹500-1,500 |

| Camel safari Jaisalmer | N/A | ₹1,500-4,000 |

| Cooking class | N/A | ₹1,500-3,000 |

| Houseboat Kerala (1 night) | ₹5,000-8,000 | ₹8,000-15,000 |

**Yes, differential pricing is legal.** The Taj Mahal charges Indians ₹50 and foreigners ₹1,100. This applies to all Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) monuments. It's government policy, not a scam. Budget for it.

**Safari tip:** Book jeep safaris directly through the national park website or your hotel. Avoid "agents" outside the park gate — they're middlemen adding 30-50%.

The Haggling Guide

### Where to Haggle

- Street markets and bazaars

- Auto-rickshaws without meters

- Non-fixed-price shops (no price tags visible)

- Tour guides and private drivers

### Where NOT to Haggle

- Shops with printed price tags

- Government emporiums (fixed price, fair quality)

- Restaurants

- Supermarkets and malls

- Uber/Ola

### The Technique

1. **Ask the price.** They'll quote 2-3x the real value.

2. **Look unimpressed.** Not rude — just not excited.

3. **Counter at 40% of their asking price.** They'll act shocked. This is theater.

4. **They'll come down to 70-80%.** You come up to 50-55%.

5. **Settle at 60-70%** of the original asking price. Both sides are happy.

6. **The walk-away:** If they won't meet your price, start walking. If they call you back, you win. If they don't, you were too low.

### The Psychology

Haggling in India is expected and enjoyed. It's a social interaction, not a confrontation. Smile. Be friendly. Don't get emotional about ₹50. The vendor is trying to make a living. You're trying not to be overcharged. Both positions are reasonable.

The ₹100 Test

Before you spend 10 minutes arguing about a price, do this math:

Is the disagreement about more or less than ₹100?

₹100 = approximately $1.20 USD / $1.80 AUD.

If the gap is ₹100 or less: **just pay it.** Your time, energy, and mood are worth more than a dollar. The vendor probably needs it more than you do. And the 10 minutes you saved can be spent actually enjoying India.

If the gap is ₹500+: haggle away. That's real money being added because of how you look.

Daily Budget Benchmarks

| Style | Per Person Per Day (INR) | Per Person Per Day (USD) |

|-------|------------------------|--------------------------|

| Backpacker | ₹1,500-3,000 | $18-36 |

| Comfortable | ₹4,000-8,000 | $48-96 |

| Premium | ₹10,000-20,000 | $120-240 |

| Luxury | ₹25,000+ | $300+ |

These include accommodation, food, transport, and activities. India remains one of the cheapest countries in the world for travelers. Even "luxury" in India costs less than "comfortable" in most of Europe.

The Bottom Line

You will get overcharged in India. It's going to happen. The question is how much and how often.

Use apps (Uber, Ola, Google Maps) to eliminate negotiation. Use prepaid counters at airports. Eat where locals eat. Book activities through hotel desks or official websites.

And when you do get overcharged by ₹200 on a ₹300 ride — and you will — remember: you're arguing about $2.40. Let it go. Enjoy your trip.
