Most of the orange, blue and green tiles have weathered off, but enough remain to show what Mughal Agra looked like before everyone copied the white-marble Taj template. Best: October to March, late afternoon when low sun catches surviving tiles. A 1-km community-run walk through the village that once housed the artisans who built the Taj — taking in the Gyarah Sidi (claimed to be Akbar's earliest astronomical observatory), Humayun's Mosque, a Mughal-era stepped baoli, and ending at Mehtab Bagh for the back view of the Taj. Tip: Buy petha as a takeaway only from the main Sadar counter — branches in malls turn over slower stock. The dalmoth (savoury lentil mix) keeps for 2 weeks unrefrigerated; better travel gift than petha.

Established 1921 — the south-Indian-veg outpost in Agra long before that was a category. Still serves the original dosa-thali menu plus an unexpectedly large ice-cream sundae list. Locally also rebranded as Deepee Restaurant.
Tip: Sit upstairs for the cleaner section; downstairs is faster but cramped. The sundae pages are the dessert locals come for after a Sadar dinner — order regardless of how full you are.
Signature: bedai with aloo sabzi and jalebi
Belanganj's 73-year-old breakfast counter — the city's reference plate for bedai (kachori made of urad dal) with spicy aloo sabzi, finished with hot jalebi to cut the heat. What chole bhature is to Delhi, this set is to Agra.
Tip: Bedai is served only 9am-2pm — the post-2pm jalebi is freshly fried but the bedai stops. Cash only; no seating, eat standing at the counter.
Signature: tandoor-grilled platter
The candlelit tandoor specialty room of The Oberoi Amarvilas — recipes cited as drawn from the Mughal emperors' kitchens, paired with live santoor through dinner. Two seatings (7pm and 9:30pm), strict reservations.
Tip: Children under 8 are not admitted. The 7pm seating gets the lingering Taj-floodlight view; 9:30pm has fewer in-house guests. Smart-casual minimum.

Founded 1926 by Pancham Lal Goyal — the brand most travellers associate with Agra petha. Multiple branches and many lookalike 'Panchhi'-named imitators in the city; the Hing ki Mandi flagship is the verifiable original counter.
Tip: The 'Panchhi Petha Store' on the official site lists exact authorised counters — rickshaw drivers will steer you to non-original shops with similar names for commission. Insist on Hing ki Mandi or Civil Lines branches.

ITC's North-West-Frontier signature room at ITC Mughal — Bukhara-school clay-oven cooking. Dal Bukhara (slow-cooked overnight on charcoal, finished with cream) and Sikandari Raan (whole leg of lamb, marinated overnight) are the dishes locals book for.
Tip: Eat with hands — cutlery is provided but the restaurant's whole format is built around the bib-and-fingers approach. Sikandari Raan needs to be pre-ordered ~3 hours ahead; ask at reservation.

Third-generation petha maker near Sadar Bazaar. His family has been making Agra ka petha since 1940. The paan petha and angoori petha here are nothing like the packaged stuff tourists buy at the station. He still uses the traditional coal-fired kadhai method.
Fifth-generation pietra dura (marble inlay) craftsman whose ancestors actually worked on the Taj Mahal. His workshop near Taj East Gate shows the real craft — not the factory-made stuff sold to tour groups. Watching him work a single flower pattern that takes 3 weeks is humbling.

Real experiences by traveler type — not generic star ratings
The Taj Mahal lives up to the hype — genuinely breathtaking. Go at sunrise from the south gate entrance. Agra Fort is equally impressive and less crowded. Mehtab Bagh across the river for the sunset Taj view is essential. The city beyond the monuments is rough — manage expectations.
💡 Tip: Buy tickets online the night before. The sunrise slot from the east gate opens at 6am — be in line by 5:30am.
Mehtab Bagh at sunset — the Taj across the Yamuna with the river in the foreground. That is the shot every photographer comes for and it delivers. Inside the Taj, the inlay marble work deserves a macro lens. Agra Fort has incredible framing opportunities through arched doorways toward the Taj.
💡 Tip: Full moon nights the Taj is open for viewing. Limited tickets, book on ASI website 2 weeks ahead. The moonlit Taj is ethereal.
Kids were impressed by the Taj for about 20 minutes then wanted ice cream. Fair enough. Agra Fort held their attention longer — the palace rooms and the view of the Taj from the fort fascinated them. Fatehpur Sikri (40 min drive) is like a ghost city — kids loved exploring.

Watching sunrise at the Taj together with hardly anyone else there — one of those moments you never forget. The story of the Taj itself is the ultimate love story. Dinner at a rooftop restaurant with the Taj lit up in the background sealed the trip. Agra deserves a full day, not a day trip.
