Cultural Context
Seven cities layered on top of each other spanning 2000+ years — Mughal forts, British colonial boulevards, and modern India's capital. Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad) is a sensory overload of narrow lanes and street food. New Delhi is wide avenues and government buildings. Together they are India's most complex, contradictory, and rewarding city.
What to Wear
Varies by area. Conservative in Old Delhi and around mosques (Jama Masjid). Modern malls and South Delhi are relaxed. Women may feel more comfortable with shoulders covered in crowded areas.
Food Safety
Street food is legendary but risky for newcomers. Start with established restaurants, then graduate to famous street stalls (Paranthe Wali Gali, Karim's). Avoid tap water and ice from unknown sources.
