The Dharamshala-McLeod Ganj Tibetan Food Trail

# The McLeod Ganj Tibetan Food Trail

McLeod Ganj is the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile — and the best place in India to eat Tibetan food prepared by families who brought recipes from Lhasa.

The Momo Map

Tibet Kitchen (Jogiwara Road): Consensus best momos. Steamed, with red chilli sauce that has actual depth. Rs 120. Thukpa equally good — a full meal in a bowl.

Lung Ta (TIPA Road): Japanese-Tibetan fusion. Tofu momos excellent for vegetarians. Quieter. Rs 150.

For cheap momos: Any Tibetan-run stall on Temple Road. Rs 60-80. Quality remarkably consistent.

Beyond Momos

Carpe Diem for proper butter tea — salty, yak-butter style. Rs 50. An acquired taste.

Jimmy's Italian Kitchen: Wood-fired pizza that has no business being this good at 2,000m. Rs 350.

Common Ground Cafe: Cinnamon rolls and drip coffee. Best Western-style breakfast in McLeod.

Practical Intelligence

Best months: March-May and September-November. Budget: Rs 300-500/day covers everything. Vegetarian: Extremely easy — Tibetan cuisine is 50% vegetarian. Altitude: 1,770m — eat lighter than you think.
