Yusmarg in February
Jammu & Kashmir, India
February is Yusmarg's coldest — -8 to 3°C. Snow depth at maximum. The meadow is a white expanse. The surrounding peaks carry heavy snow. The pine forests are quiet. The handful of guesthouses may or may not be operating. February Yusmarg exists only for those specifically seeking snow-covered Kashmir meadow in total solitude.
The February story
February is the deepest Yusmarg winter. The meadow under maximum snow is a white plateau against white peaks — the only contrast is the dark green of snow-laden pines. The silence is extraordinary: no traffic, no tourist activity, no generators, no music. Just wind, occasional bird call, and the creak of snow-heavy branches. If the JKTDC hut is operational (call ahead: Srinagar tourism office), you may be the only guest. The nearby village of Charar-e-Sharief (25km back toward Srinagar) has the famous shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani (Nund Rishi, Kashmir's patron saint) — the rebuilt shrine (original burned in 1995 during militancy) is worth the stop. February Yusmarg is extreme solitude. If that's what you need — and some travellers do — nothing in Kashmir matches it.
