The February story
February continues winter solitude. NIM's basic mountaineering courses (BMC, 26 days, ₹5,000-7,000 — remarkable value for professional instruction) take trainees into the surrounding mountains for ice craft, rope work, and snow survival. Watching NIM trainees practice on the training rock near the campus is free entertainment. The Kashi Vishwanath temple morning aarti (6am) is attended by a handful of devotees — deeply personal. The local market sells Garhwali woolens, dried fruits, and rajma (kidney beans) that the region is famous for. The Bhagirathi gorge walk toward Gangnani hot springs (40km upstream) is cold but beautiful. Hotels at ₹500-1,000. February Uttarkashi is unpolished, cold, and genuine — the mountain town equivalent of a favourite worn sweater.
