Caution
Tirthan Valley in February
Himachal Pradesh, India
February is the tail end of winter in Tirthan Valley. Snow persists on north-facing slopes and above 2,200m but the valley floor is mostly clear by mid-month. Temperatures warm slightly: 0-2°C nights, 10-13°C afternoons in sun. The Tirthan River stays low and glassy. Almond trees begin blooming in the last week — the first sign of spring in the valley. GHNP remains closed for trekking. Homestay rates stay low, rising only slightly toward month-end as early spring visitors arrive. Jalori Pass road is hit-or-miss depending on recent snowfall.
The February story
Late February is a transition window that rewards flexible travelers. The valley starts shaking off winter: birds return (grey treepie, Himalayan bulbul, blue whistling thrush), morning frost gives way to sunny afternoons warm enough for a light jacket, and the almond blossoms against snow-dusted ridgelines create a visual contrast unique to this week-long window. Homestays are still uncrowded — you will likely be one of 2-3 groups at any property. The riverside walk from Gushaini to the GHNP gate (7km one way) is pleasant on clear days, even though the park is closed. Several homestay owners run short nature walks pointing out medicinal plants and bird species — worth doing, these are locals who grew up foraging these forests. Trout fishing is still closed but catch-and-release practice sessions are sometimes available through local operators (ask at Raju's guesthouse or Tirthan Anglers). The road from Aut (NH-21 junction) to Banjar is reliable year-round. Cell coverage (Jio, Airtel) works in main villages. February Tirthan is winter comfort at spring prices — the arithmetic works.
