Sissu in July
Himachal Pradesh, India
July monsoon reaches Lahaul in diminished form — rain shadow means 50-80mm versus 500mm on the Manali side. Sissu gets rain but not the deluge. Temperatures at 12-24°C. The waterfall is at maximum volume. Cloud hangs in the valley creating dramatic reveals. The Manali-Leh traffic peaks. Sissu's location right at the tunnel exit makes it the first Lahaul stop for most travellers. Guesthouses and dhabas do their year's best business.
The July story
July Sissu benefits from Lahaul's rain shadow — while Manali drowns in 500mm of monsoon, Sissu gets 50-80mm. The waterfall is at maximum volume from combined snowmelt and rain. The valley floor is green but the peaks are often in cloud. The Manali-Leh bikers at peak numbers stop for the famous tunnel-exit waterfall photo. Guesthouses are full. The village atmosphere is its liveliest — Sissu has more visitors per resident than any month. The Chandra River runs high and fast. The camping by the river is atmospheric but wet ground is common. Carry a good tent or book the guesthouses. The contrast between Manali-side monsoon (soup) and Lahaul-side monsoon (manageable) is the Atal Tunnel's most dramatic daily demonstration.
