Caution
Patnitop in July
Jammu & Kashmir, India
July monsoon drenches Patnitop—300-400mm. The pine forests are impossibly green. Cloud lives at ground level. The highway is vulnerable to landslides. Tourist numbers are minimal. The town operates for its residents and the occasional stranded highway traveler.
The July story
July Patnitop is for the rare traveler who finds monsoon pine forests therapeutic. The sound of rain on a tin-roofed guesthouse, surrounded by pine forest in cloud, is a particular kind of meditation. The walks—short, muddy, leech-prone—reveal monsoon wildflowers and fungi. The highway stops are busy with trucks and military convoys heading to Kashmir; the roadside dhabas serve hot rajma chawal and chai that taste extraordinary when you're cold and wet. If you're stranded by a landslide (it happens), Patnitop is a far better place to wait than most highway stops. July Patnitop doesn't try to impress. It just is what it is: a monsoon hill, green and quiet.
