Mount Abu in August
Rajasthan, India
August continues heavy monsoon. Mount Abu records among the highest rainfall in Rajasthan—the Aravallis wring moisture from Arabian Sea clouds. Everything is green, damp, and dramatic. Tourist numbers remain low. The Wildlife Sanctuary is at peak activity. The town feels like a different place than the May version.
The August story
August Mount Abu is a monsoon immersion. The Aravalli forest trails—Trevor's Tank (bear-watching spot), the Bailey Walk around Nakki Lake, the Sunset Point Ridge—are all navigable but wet. The Trevor's Tank area, established by a British colonel for bear-watching, is your best chance to see wild sloth bears in monsoon when they emerge to forage in the rain. The Nakki Lake, supposedly dug by the gods using their nails (nakh = nail), is full and dramatic with monsoon overflow. The Dilwara marble, continuously washed by rain mist, achieves an almost luminous quality. August Independence Day celebrations in Mount Abu are modest—a flag ceremony at the government grounds—but the setting, in rain-wrapped hills, is memorable.
