Fair
Manikaran in February
Himachal Pradesh, India
February keeps Manikaran in deep winter with similar conditions to January. The hot springs feel even more essential as temperatures hover around -2°C to 8°C. Snow occasionally dusts the valley slopes above town. The Parvati River is at its lowest and clearest. Pilgrim numbers remain small—mostly Sikh devotees on winter yatras.
The February story
The Gurudwara's warmth—both thermal and human—is February's defining experience. Langar serves hot meals three times daily to whoever shows up, and the communal eating hall, heated by geothermal steam, is one of the warmest indoor spaces in the valley. The Hindu temple complex, slightly upstream, has individual bathing chambers fed by hot springs at different temperatures. Locals use the springs for everything from cooking to washing clothes. The walk along the Parvati River toward Tosh (14 km) is cold but spectacular through narrow gorge sections. Carry provisions from Bhuntar or Kullu—Manikaran's own market is limited in winter. The bridge connecting the two sides of town sways over the rushing Parvati in a way that's thrilling or terrifying depending on your disposition.
