Peak Season
Manali in October
Himachal Pradesh, India
October is Manali's best month. NakshIQ says this without qualification. The monsoon is gone, skies are razor-sharp, temperatures sit at 8-18°C, and the valley turns gold and amber as chinar and walnut trees change colour. Snow dusts the higher peaks while the valley floor stays clear and dry. NH-21 is fully repaired and the Chandigarh drive is smooth. Tourist numbers are moderate — Dussehra week gets a bump but otherwise it's a fraction of summer crowds. This is when Manali looks like the postcards, except the postcards don't capture the quality of light.
The October story
Everything works in October. Rohtang Pass is open with clear views — you can see all the way to the Chandrabhaga range without a single cloud. The Atal Tunnel drive to Lahaul gives you golden valley on one side and stark high-desert on the other — one of India's great scenic contrasts in a single 30-minute drive. Solang Valley paragliding operates in perfect thermal conditions with crystal visibility. The Beas River settles into ideal rafting volume — strong enough for exciting Grade II-III rapids, clear enough to see the riverbed. Old Manali has its best energy: enough travellers for atmosphere, few enough for actual conversation. Every cafe terrace has a view of snow peaks framed by golden leaves. Trekking is at its peak — Bhrigu Lake (4,300m) is accessible with early snow forming a collar around the turquoise water. Hampta Pass is still open until mid-October. Photography is obscenely good: golden hour lasts longer, the air has zero haze, and the contrast between autumn foliage and snow peaks is unmatched. Room rates are 20-30% below summer, and availability is easy except Dussehra week.
