Peak Season
Barot Valley in October
Himachal Pradesh, India
October is Barot's autumn reward. Clear skies, golden deodar forests, the Uhl running clean after monsoon flush, and the rail-track walk at its most photogenic. Apple harvest season fills the valley with the scent of ripe fruit. Temperatures: 8-20°C.
The October story
October Barot is the valley's finest expression. The rail-track walk is dry, safe, and framed by autumn colour — golden birch leaves against green deodar, the Uhl running blue-green below, and snow peaks visible on clear mornings at the valley head. Apple harvest means the village smells of fruit and wood-smoke. The trout fishing is in its final weeks — autumn fish are strong and well-fed from monsoon's insect abundance. Camping is excellent: cold nights (5-8°C) that demand a good sleeping bag, warm days (18-22°C) that make river-side sitting a pleasure. The Shanan tunnel intake, where the Uhl is diverted underground, is at its most dramatic with high autumn water levels. October is when Barot proves it's more than a summer escape from plains heat — it's a legitimate Himachali destination with its own identity. Three nights minimum.
