Kargil in May
Ladakh, India
May opens Kargil to the world. The Srinagar-Leh highway typically opens in late May (exact date depends on BRO clearing Zoji La pass at 3528m). Apricot blossoms are at their peak or just past. Temperatures at 5-20°C are comfortable. The war memorial receives its first visitors. The Zanskar gateway road toward Padum starts clearing. Tourist infrastructure — basic by any standard — begins operating.
The May story
Late May Kargil is a revelation for those willing to be among the first through Zoji La. The pass opening is an event — convoys of vehicles queue, BRO personnel manage traffic, and the first cars through receive cheers. Kargil's war memorial is the essential first stop: the Hall of Fame documents the 1999 conflict with recovered weapons, letters, and personal effects. The sound-and-light show (evening, check schedule) recreates the battle narrative. Beyond the memorial, the surrounding terrain tells the story physically: Tiger Hill, Tololing, Point 4875 — all visible and some accessible. The Suru valley in late spring, with apricot trees in leaf and barley fields greening, is a different Afghanistan-like beauty. For Zanskar-bound travellers, Kargil is the gateway — the road to Rangdum and Padum opens through May-June. Accommodation: basic hotels Rs 800-2000. Food: Kargili cuisine (mutton, apricot-based dishes, bread) is distinct from both Kashmiri and Ladakhi. The town deserves at least one full day, not just a highway transit stop.
