Kargil in February
Ladakh, India
February continues Kargil's deep freeze — -18 to -4°C, some of the coldest temperatures in inhabited India. The frozen landscape has a severe beauty. The Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar (accessed from Leh side) is at its most viable. Kargil town itself is in survival mode: basic markets operate, schools function, and life continues at a pace calibrated to cold. Almost no tourists. The war memorial under snow is haunting.
The February story
February Kargil is for Kargilis only. The -18°C nights and complete road isolation make this a non-destination for tourists. The beauty exists — frozen Suru valley, snow-covered mountains, clear winter skies — but accessing it requires being trapped for months, not visiting for days. The Chadar trek (Leh side) is the closest tourist experience to Kargil's winter reality. For understanding the 1999 war, read or watch "LOC Kargil" and then visit in summer when you can stand on the ridges where soldiers fought in exactly these conditions. The courage required becomes comprehensible only when you feel the cold.
