Good Time
Joshimath in May
Uttarakhand, India
May is full pilgrim season. Badrinath opens (typically first week of May), and Joshimath becomes a transit hub — buses, shared jeeps, and private vehicles clog the main road. The Badrinath road (44 km from Joshimath) is open but subject to landslide closures. The Auli ropeway offers day-trip access to the meadow, now green and flowered. Temperatures are pleasant at 14-26°C. The Narsingh Temple buzzes. The subsidence story is visible everywhere — cracked buildings alongside functioning ones, a town holding itself together by willpower and necessity. Hotel rates jump to ₹1500-3000.
The May story
Badrinath is 44 km and 1.5-2 hours from Joshimath — the drive along the Alaknanda gorge is dramatic, and the temple at 3133m is one of India's most sacred Vishnu shrines. Queue times: 1-4 hours in May. Helicopter services run from the Badrinath helipad. The Mana village (3 km past Badrinath, last Indian village) is worth a stop — Vyas Gufa (where Vyasa dictated the Mahabharata), Bhim Pul (a natural rock bridge over the Saraswati River), and the Vasudhara Falls trail. Back in Joshimath, the Auli ropeway day trip is excellent — the meadow is green with wildflowers and the mountain views are clear. The Kuari Pass trek (3-4 days from Auli, moderate, max altitude 3658m) is in prime condition and one of the best Himalayan treks for the effort-to-reward ratio. Room rates in Joshimath: ₹1500-3000, up to ₹5000 for the better properties. Food: Vishnu Hotel on the main road does a reliable thali. The Shankaracharya Math welcomes visitors for darshan. The subsidence zone is a sobering contrast to the pilgrim optimism — the two Joshimaths exist simultaneously.
