The February story
The Desert Festival is not a sanitized tourist show — it's genuinely eccentric. Camel polo with makeshift goals, turban-tying races where grown men sprint with 9-meter fabric, and a Mr. Desert pageant judged partly on moustache magnificence. The culminating full-moon concert at Sam Dunes — folk musicians performing as the moon rises over the desert — is one of those experiences that sounds too good to be real but actually delivers. Even beyond the festival, February Jaisalmer offers the last of winter's comfortable temperatures before the heat begins building. The Gadsisar Lake (man-made, centuries old) is a peaceful morning escape from the fort's tourist bustle. Kuldhara abandoned village, 18km out, is best visited this month when the drive through the desert is pleasant rather than punishing. The festival does inflate prices and accommodation fills up — book 2-3 weeks ahead minimum.
